- Description
- Rhinovirus (RV) remains an important human pathogen. While in most individuals it at worst causes minor symptoms, it does play a more sinister and destructive role in causing respiratory disease. In the very young and the very old and those with compromised immunity RV has the potential to cause life-threatening disease. In the larger numbers of people with chronic respiratory disease, especially asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), RV continues to be an important trigger of acute worsening of their chronic inflammatory airways diseases. People with asthma and COPD are susceptible to the effects of RV infection, while the infection itself worsens underlying chronic airway inflammation.
